Custom Portfolios

As we build portfolios consistent with The Bucket Strategy®, we do so using carefully selected individual securities to the greatest extent possible. This provides maximum transparency and keeps expenses low. Furthermore, for taxable accounts, this approach allows for better tax management.

Bucket 1: Short-Term (5-7 year depletion period)

  • INCOME
Fixed income securities across various types.

Bucket 2: Mid-Term (5-8 year holding period)

  • RISING DIVIDEND
A diversified portfolio of approximately 30 large domestic companies across multiple sectors, with compelling growth stories, attractive valuations, sustainable dividends, and prospects for dividend growth over time.

Bucket 3: Long-Term (10-15 year holding period)

  • FOCUSED GROWTH
A concentrated portfolio of approximately 15 high conviction domestic companies that generate sustainable recurring revenue, have a competitive advantage, a prudent balance sheet and strong pricing power.
  • GLOBAL GROWTH
A diversified portfolio of approximately 35 global companies across multiple sectors, with compelling growth stories, and attractive valuations. All international companies' shares are traded on a major U.S. exchange.
  • INFLECTION GROWTH
A concentrated portfolio of approximately 10 high conviction, high growth companies. This is a very aggressive portfolio with high volatility. Any sector diversification is incidental. Technology is heavily represented.

OPTIONAL IMPLEMENTATION

Buckets also can be implemented using American Funds (active) mutual funds or Vanguard index (passive) exchange-traded funds (ETFs), depending on circumstance, preference, tax considerations, and more.

OPTIONAL BUCKETS

Protected Income Bucket

  • Partnering with select, carefully vetted insurance companies to generate lifetime income can provide additional confidence and help address longevity risk.

Alternatives Bucket

  • Alternative investments have the potential to perform independently of traditional asset classes. Objectives can include growth, income, or a combination of the two.
